Over dit evenement
Looking for some time where your phone is away and your hands remember making something meaningful?
Clay & Rituals is a three-hour handbuilding ceramics workshop in Amsterdam.
We begin with a question: what moment in your day do you want to make more intentional? Through guided reflection, you'll map your own rituals. The small daily acts that mark time and say, this moment is chosen. Then you'll design and build a clay object for that moment, with your hands, at your own pace.
No experience needed. No perfect result expected. There is tea and coffee, there is quiet, and there is something that happens when your hands take over and your phone is away.
Your piece will be fired and ready to take home within a few weeks. It will sit somewhere you see it every day: a cup, a bowl, an incense holder, a small vessel. Not just an object, but a reminder of that afternoon and what it felt like to slow down enough to make something real.
Clay has been part of human ritual for 10,000 years. This workshop is a small continuation of that.

1. Welcome and the space
Workshop participants ease into the day with a welcome circle to get grounded and set the tone. Explanation of the workshop.
2.Ritual in Conversation
Why ritual matters and what it signals to our nervous system. Talking about the rituals of creative people, and why to choose clay.
With guided questions, personal exercise to reflect on your own day, habits and rituals.
3. Vessel Design
Bridging from ritual to vessel. What object would serve it? Designing the vessel with guidance, thinking with a sketch, writing, or any other chosen method.
4. Hands in Clay: Making
Demonstration of hand building techniques. We touch the clay and start making. Questions are welcome, hands on help and guidance. Decorating and finishing the piece, fine tuning.
'When mind uses itself without the hands it runs the circle and may go too fast.... The hand that shapes the mind into clay or written word slows thought to the gait of things and lets it be subject to accident and time.'
Ursula K. Le Guin
What happens to my piece after the workshop?
Your piece will be glazed with a transparent glaze and fired at 1240°C. It usually takes 2–3 weeks to dry and be fired, depending on the weather and how busy the studio is. Once it’s ready, I’ll let you know and you can pick it up from the studio within 10 days. I don’t ship workshop pieces.
Do I need any experience with clay?
No experience is needed. The workshop is open to beginners and curious makers, and I’ll guide you through the process step by step.
