Workshop by Maaike van de Westeringh
To tree or not to tree - contact improvisation workshop
Kai, my 3 year old daughter often says:
“When you are eating, you are eating.
When you are walking, you are walking.
When you are dancing, you are dancing.”
Trees and plants are also experts in just doing what they do. No doubts, judgements or questions are disturbing them. They just are. This class we let ourselves be inspired by those modest green organisms. How they burst out of their seeds, grow a network of roots into the earth to ground themselves and how they rise and shine their elegant branches and leaves into the infinite space. They can move into a precise and certain direction while being flexible and resilient. When an obstacle is blocking their way they change direction and simply move around. They are firm and soft at the same time. And last but not least they are communicating and supporting each other through a widespread network that covers enormous distances and is delicate and extremely adequate. We use our imagination to find this treeness inside of us. And from this autonomous and connected place, we dive into our contact-dance to create a jungle of intertwined bodies.
We will close the workshop with a potluck, exchanging our experiences and sharing food. Feel free to bring what you wish to share with your fellow movers! Tea and some snacks are provided.

About Maaike:
What Maaike loves about dance is that it brings us to the beauty of the moment – and every moment is different. Out of this interest her fascination for improvisation and contact-improvisation was born. She studied dance at the dance academy in Tilburg (NL), with David Zambrano, Julien Hamilton and among others. She worked as a dancer with choreographers as Loic Perela, Anne-beth Schuurmans, Marie Goeminne, T.R.A.S.H. and Karen Boesser (DE). She finds a constant eagerness to learn more about the body’s expression and how dance can contribute to people’s mental and physical health. She feels dance is the ultimate way to connect to people and their innerworld. For several years she has been creating dance-performances for a very young audience (1+) in collaboration with musicians. With Reineke Jonker she runs the Theaterhuiskamer where stories of different communities are transformed into theatre. Last year she created 'Little Movement', her first first dance-movie as a choreographer in collaboration with Sergio Gridelli. See also www.kudde.info. Let's dance.
