Usually, a Kirtan leader sings a mantra or a phrase, and everyone joins in by repeating it. The melodies are often simple and repetitive, allowing you to gradually settle into the rhythm without needing to think too much about what comes next.
You can sing along, listen quietly, close your eyes, clap your hands, sway your body or get up and dance when the music moves you. There's no right or wrong way to participate. You might feel joyful and energised, deeply peaceful, emotional, or simply enjoy the music and the togetherness.
The mantras are traditionally sung as an expression of love, gratitude and devotion to the Divine. You don't need to subscribe to any particular belief to appreciate the experience. Think of it as an opportunity to put aside the noise of everyday life, connect with your heart and share a musical experience with others.
