Join us for a Sunday of dance and contact!
"Just the pleasure of using your body is, I think, maybe the main point. And the pleasure of dancing with somebody in an unplanned and spontaneous way..."
Steve Paxton
Contact improvisation is an open, improvised dance involving 2 or more bodies, with physical contact as the main mode of communication. The dance includes rolling, falling, being upside down, following a physical point of contact and giving weight to a partner. Dance partners often move in and out of physical contact, flow together, and improvise while mutually supporting and following each other's movements. Sometimes wild and athletic, sometimes quiet and meditative. It is a form of dance accessible to all bodies and inquiring minds.

Mobility opportunities: the head/tail connection
In this workshop, we explore the spine's functionality as our movement center, discovering how conscious engagement from this central axis expands possibilities, creates ease, and refines choice-making for dancers.
We'll transform spinal awareness from abstract concept to embodied experience through guided practice. Our investigation unfolds through multiple pathways: supportive hands-on work with partners, solo exploration, and dynamic partner dancing—all while suspended in the gravitational field, experiencing the spine as the true engine of our movement.
What makes this work compelling is how it deepens our relationship with our bodies' inherent intelligence. By examining our unique patterns of mobility and posture, we move toward more natural functionality, allowing our dancing to emerge with greater clarity and presence.
Robin Berkelmans:
Robin is a seasoned performer, dancer, choreographer, and teacher with over 25 years of experience in contemporary dance and physical theatre. He has taught and teaches at the University of Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam and the Fontys Academy in Tilburg, specializing in contemporary dance technique, floorwork, performance, choreography, dance and theatre improvisation, and - of course - Contact Improvisation. Next to this, he is part of Concert Curieus, a dance and music collective that performs for 0-4 years olds and their parents, using Instant Composition as their performing method.
Robin's teaching approach is informed by his experience in Feldenkrais and Alexander Technique, as well as his ongoing practice of Tai Chi, Chi Kung, and Thai massage. This multidisciplinary foundation, combined with his artistic approach to the world, allows him to guide dancers toward a more profound connection with themselves through natural mobility and presence while enabling them to use the inner landscape as a source.
As a teacher of CI, he is currently offering an in-depth program of Underscore. He used this program to guide people towards effortless mobility and refined improvising together. As the co-organizer of the Netherlands Contact Improvisation Festival and other events in the Netherlands Robin regularly shares his expertise through workshops and classes across Europe.
